Family Cottage in Winnipeg
As I remember it from childhood, the cottage, located in Traverse Bay (near Grand Beach) was always a trailer home (with additions) plus a small cottage with a sauna on the back. A shed with an outhouse behind comprised the third building.
Tragically, the cottage burned to the ground a couple of years ago due to a sauna mishap. The trailer was replaced with a new, fancier trailer (and a new, fancier addition) and a canvas garage where the smaller cottage was. I have to say, the new place looks very nice. But the crowning achievement of the cottage is, as always, the display of various lawn ornaments, birdhouses, statuettes, knicknacks, doohickeys and whoosawhatchits that Memere grows and maintains, artfully strewn about the property.
So Mom, Becca, John, Memere, Sue and I went to visit the cottage on Tuesday / Wednesday, to see the new digs and help pack up the ornaments for the year.
Tuesday: after arrival (and lunch) we packed up the ornaments and cleaned up the yard. After a bit of creative inukshuk building, a game of horseshoes ensued, with the Sue-John team winning twice (but close games, both). After dinner (including a quick celebration of Becca's birthday, with cake) it was time to lose some money at cards. Much giggling and hilarity ensued, with Becca and Memere being the primary winners for the night, yours truly losing around half a buck.
Wednesday: a little bit of cleaning up, and then we went to visit the beaches around the area. A stop in Lockport for lunch at Skinners (world famous hot dogs, apparently), and then back to the city.
